Planning low-carbon grids the cheap way

Published in ERW, 25 Jan 2016

Nicaragua could achieve a low-carbon electricity grid cost-effectively, according to scientists who used open-access data and models.

The results demonstrate that the evaluation of energy-system options need not be beyond the means of people on restricted budgets, such as those in the developing world, the researchers say.

“Nicaragua’s options illustrate the opportunities and challenges of power system decarbonization for emerging economies, and the key role that open-access data and modelling platforms can play in helping develop low-carbon transition pathways,” wrote Dan Kammen at the University of California Berkeley and colleagues in Environmental Research Letters (ERL).
