Living near workplace or public transport brings higher air pollution risk

Some residents of Miami in Florida, US, choose to live in rented property close to their place of work or near to public transport, despite being aware that such choices increase their exposure to carcinogenic vehicle fumes, a study suggests.

The study by researchers at the University of Texas at El Paso, US, appears to show that, particularly for ethnic minorities and those on the social margins, the needs of accommodation can outweigh health considerations, according to lead author Timothy Collins. “The imperatives of renting one’s home, or living close to work or public transportation, may channel residents toward riskier residential locations,” he said.
